The WHAT, HOW and WHY about POLYMER CLAY
The term Polymer Clay ["PC"] refers to a synthetic clay which
consists of tiny polyvinyl chloride particles suspended in plasticizers
and mixed with various pigments. As with traditional clays,
it is pliable when raw and hardens by curing. PC is extremely
malleable and versatile, highly fade resistant, waterproof,
with unlimited creative potential. That is why it is fast becoming
the preferred medium for many highly accomplished, talented
artists who had previously worked in oils, acrylics, precious
metals, etc.. Today you will find PC creations in collections
and fine galleries around the world.
Some brands of PC are also a convenient medium for use by
children and hobby crafters; that's part of its versatility.
No one would dismiss a Van Gogh pencil sketch because it is
made of "only" paper and pencil; so also, creations made with
PC are now valued based on the quality, originality, beauty
and strength of the individual work of art.
Although I have painted, sculpted, or worked in fine metals
both before and during my years as an attorney, it was the endless
potential of PC that so stimulated my creative juices that I
decided to hang up my shingle, close my law office of 30 years,
and devote my time, effort and imagination to creating works
of art. I hope you enjoy looking at the results one iota as
much as I have enjoyed making them.
The WHAT, HOW and WHY about
MEZUZAH CASES
A Mezuzah is a piece of parchment inscribed
with two Hebrew verses from the Torah, enclosed in a decorative
and protective case and hung on exterior and interior [other
than bathroom] doorposts of Jewish homes. The prayers, from
Deuteronomy 6:9 and 11:2, instruct us to inscribe these words
upon the doorposts of our house and upon our gates and remind
us that God is always present in our lives and that we should
keep God's words constantly in our minds and in our hearts.
Some folks --- of any religious persuasion ---- may chose
to write their own prayer or to select a message of personal
or spiritual significance and place that message into one of
my handmade, one-of-a-kind cases. That is your choice and perfectly
fine with me.
Mezuzah cases are often artistic objects in ceramics, wood,
metal, glass, etc. Mine are made with polymer clay, paint, and
other fine art materials. They do not contain a kosher
mezuzah parchment, which can be purchased from synagogue gift
stores or on line at sites such as
www.zionjudaica.com/Mezuzah_Scrolls-17.asp
My Mezuzah case vary from 2.5 to 4" tall and
1.5 to 2" wide. They can be affixed to the doorpost with nails,
screws, glue, or double-sided tape, either vertically or diagonally. When
you order your Mezuzah cases, let me know how you want to hang
them. I'll be happy to drill holes for screws or to include
double-sided tape with your order. I will also include a non-kosher
copy of the prayer if you wish.
